It's been two weeks since Joe Biden's disappointing debate performance, and in that time the media have been breathlessly discussing his age, fitness, and potential replacements. Despite an unequivocal post-debate editorial from The Philadelphia Inquirer calling for Trump to leave the race, most media coverage has been curiously silent on concerns about Trump's mental state, policy aims, lies, and promises of retribution.
In the last few days, that reluctance to stop giving Trump a pass finally seems to be cracking, first with pieces on the 78-year-old Trump's performance at a rally in Florida, and then with today's New York Times editorial calling the presumptive GOP nominee unfit to lead. At least two other publications have followed suit. It's long past time for this important conversation.
