Tomorrow will be February 29, an extra day that marks both a Leap Year and a Presidential Election year and it will be for four more years before these come around again. But even that calendar confluence won't last forever because the Gregorian Calendar requires that the years marking the end of a century are only leap years if they are also divisible by 400 (2000 was, but 2100 won't be). </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Our former chair, Susan Newton, shares some thoughts in our latest newsletter on the threats and actions we can take to keep our democracy healthy and thriving--to 2100 and beyond.<br /></span></span></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-size: small;"><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CCrmju2jyZ-RVKzuTO_NjyehYLQY1KrQ/view?usp=sharing" style="font-family: arial;">SHDTC Updates-Threats to American Democracy Are Real_Issue 50-022824</a></span><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></li></ul>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5244357733106845200.post-76422133451751575582024-02-25T10:25:00.013-05:002024-02-25T10:38:26.991-05:00Heat Pump Webinar on February 28<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwtayRmdKpG0WeEr7QE4koL1je_djsXb4L-3JRqoQJzQbGgmlbL67C1dqVSYnS1umLDkyIn8HqDxKmmitOmIo0vNgn-sqTJ0tdzIHGOtvXylsqzKN0-GvEfUburdQYSVyf1Smx3L9gMnDGco8SP0g0herUsornZY0loX6EK8iHet8b654FgIwpRKcuzMJl/s1546/SoHad-HeatPumpWebinar.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="894" data-original-width="1546" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwtayRmdKpG0WeEr7QE4koL1je_djsXb4L-3JRqoQJzQbGgmlbL67C1dqVSYnS1umLDkyIn8HqDxKmmitOmIo0vNgn-sqTJ0tdzIHGOtvXylsqzKN0-GvEfUburdQYSVyf1Smx3L9gMnDGco8SP0g0herUsornZY0loX6EK8iHet8b654FgIwpRKcuzMJl/w371-h214/SoHad-HeatPumpWebinar.png" width="371" /></a></div><p></p><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">Are

How do policy, position, personality (on the part of both voters and candidates) combine with current conditions to produce a vote for a given candidate? What might keep people from voting at all? The full results of a recent survey of our own members on key issues and concerns are also shared in this issue. <br /></span></span></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-size: small;"><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PDQM4nIv-GN6rLXmMbNGtv0NoG9RXfto/view?usp=sharing" style="font-family: arial;">SHDTC Updates-Voter Motiviation_Issue 48-020924</a></span><br /></li></ul>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5244357733106845200.post-41474143784450104562024-01-30T20:42:00.000-05:002024-01-30T20:42:00.002-05:00 A Look at SHDTC Subcommittees<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial;">With a varied membership of many interests, backgrounds, and talents, there's plenty for everyone to do. There are defined jobs such as treasurer, and taking meeting minutes, as well as organizational work to prepare for meetings and keep us on track to do required tasks on our annual calendar. SHDTC Subcommittees focus on areas where we believe we can make a difference or where there is expertise or interest among our membership. Our latest newsletter offers a brief snapshot of some of the things we've been working on. </span></span></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Spi6eWZPrmiotve5CISGr6XIZ4N7HxOo/view?usp=drive_link">SHDTC Updates-SHDTC Subcommittees_Issue 47_013024</a></span></span></p></li></ul>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5244357733106845200.post-29783110671682922402024-01-30T19:00:00.000-05:002024-02-25T10:44:08.588-05:00Is This the Heat Pump Moment?<p><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline;">By Robert Salthouse and Mary Jane Else, <br />South Hadley Sustainability and Energy Commission</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 12pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline;">We have just experienced the hottest January ever, the</span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/07/climate/2024-hottest-january-data.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" shape="rect" style="text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline;"> eighth month in a row</span></a><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline;"> in

Heat pumps improve your quality of life, providing whole-home heating,

save over your current heating costs will vary depending on your current
fuel and the age of your system. You can find a heat pump savings

SHDTC writer Jim Bosman reflects on the recent past and the work we have ahead of us. In the face of so much dysfunction and disinformation, each of us will need to put in time to help share information and our perspective about the good work by so many Democratic leaders, including President Biden. <br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">There has been positive economic and policy news, even as newspaper headline writers often focus on peripheral negatives. The disconnect between good outcomes and what drives views on social media and news sites is not lost on many thoughtful readers. In recent months <i>Washington Post</i> subscribers have begun to regularly take editorial staff to task in the publication's comments section over click-bait headlines that seem misleading, partisan, or simply fail to match up to contents. This is a good development, and seems to suggest that individuals are starting to use their collective voices to create a narrative. <br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Enjoy the holidays, stay informed, and get ready to work for our democracy.<br /></span></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CfkqdyvWKqRA8d7mKvnQkSc_9ZZncq0f/view?usp=sharing" style="font-family: arial;">SHDTC Updates-Let's Get Started_Issue 44_122023</a></li><li><span style="font-family: arial;">Today's Edition Newsletter by Robert B. Among her finds were minutes of an 18th century meeting which recorded these words by Lennox: "Restoration of a genuine House of Commons, by <b>a renovation of the Rights
of the People</b>, is the only essential remedy against that system of
corruption which has brought the nation to disgrace and poverty and
threatens it with the loss of Liberty." </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial;">"Turns out,' says Allen, "I’m not the first to think that renovation is the name of the game for what it will take to restore sanity to our politics!"</span></span></p><p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial;">To read the latest op-ed in this series, use the link below for free access to the story.<br /></span></span></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-weight: normal;"><span class="gold" color="var(--wpds-colors-gold60)" data-qa="headline-opinion-prefix" style="box-sizing: border-box;"><b>Washington Post--August 23, 2023</b><br />Opinion<span aria-hidden="true" role="separator" style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></span>| </span>Is fixing democracy partisan? Each year, it seems, our changing climate brings a longer, hotter, more miserable season chock full of deadly and unanticipated events. And that's just the weather. The politics are all that and more. </span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Voters
have been using their votes to make themselves heard, though, as
happened in a recent Ohio special election whose mid-summer timing set
by Republican lawmakers was intended to discourage participation. When
they speak with their votes, voters can be loud. <br /></span></span></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Y2XO-EdlV0LigavCkN1bwYuOGmX-Ya4e/view?usp=sharing">SHDTC Updates-Dog Days of Summer-Issue 37-081123<br /></a></span></span></li><li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial;">NPR | nepm -- August 8, 2023: <a href="https://www.npr.org/2023/08/08/1191679261/ohio-election-results-issue1-abortion-state-constitution-amendment-ballot-voters"><br />Ohio voters reject measure making it harder to change constitution</a></span></span></li></ul><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial;">The months ahead will be busy and challenging, but the stakes are as high as they've ever been.
