In this month's newsletter, we're pleased to feature a piece by Vanessa Rosa, Associate Professor of Latinx Studies and Co-Chair of the Department of Critical Race and Political Economy at Mount Holyoke College. Her memories of her family and their migration from Puerto Rico to New York offer a personal look at the dreams, challenges, and frustrations that inform the experiences of so many as we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.
The Odyssey Bookshop will host an author talk by Vanessa this fall on her new book Precarious Constructions: Race, Class, and Urban Revitalization in Toronto. The event will be at 7pm on Wednesday, November 15: www.odysseybks.com/event/vanessa-rosa-person
National Hispanic Heritage Month, which evolved from earlier
celebrations in the 1960s, has been been observed from September 15 to
October 15 since 1988. A recent Boston City Council news posting
notes that the timing coincides with Independence Day celebrations of
several Latin American nations which declared their independence from
Spain on September 15, 1821.
