Supreme Court Upends Roe v. Wade

A day after striking down a New York gun law and threatening gun restrictions in Massachusetts and several other states, the Supreme Court released a final ruling overturning Roe v. Wade and rolling back women's right to abortion. In a precedent-breaking ruling that apparently changed little since a leaked draft opinion in early May, the Court upended the landmark 1973 Roe decision. Justice Samuel Alito wrote, "Stare decisis ... does not compel unending adherence to Roe's abuse of judicial authority."

Alito's opinion was joined by Clarence Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote a concurring opinion supporting the judgement on the Missisippi abortion law that the court ruled on, but disagreed with the majority on overturning Roe v. Wade. A dissenting opinion was written by Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan.

President Biden called the ruling a 'tragic error." Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine, who was criticized Friday for her role in confirming Kavanaugh and Gorsuch, said in a statement they had assured her that Roe v. Wade was established legal precedent.

Speaking at a rally in front of the Massachusetts State House on Friday, a visibly angry Senator Elizabeth Warren said "an extremist Supreme Court has decided who will get access to health care." "Make no mistake, Roe is on the ballot," she said, and every candidate must be ready to answer questions about where they stand.
