When President Biden signed the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law on November 15, 2021, the dream of east-west passenger rail in Massachusetts took a big step toward reality. With a Boston-Springfield-Pittsfield corridor study completed in December 2020 and the kickoff of a Boston-Greenfield-North Adams northern tier study in December 2021, the state is poised to benefit from new infrastructure funds. The legislation also creates new grant programs that allow for new and expanded passenger rail corridors, like the proposed east-west routes in Massachusetts. Massachusetts has 472 bridges listed in poor condition. U.S. Rep. Richard Neal noted recently in the Daily Hampshire Gazette that thanks to Congress and President Biden, some $1.1 billion in new federal bridge repair funding will be available to our state over the next five years. WesternMass News reported on an announcement by Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and Rep. Neal about a project that will replace two bridges on Armory Street, one over the active CSX railroad tracks and the other carrying Armory Street over the abandoned railroad.
