Weekly 30-minute standouts in support of racial justice and the Black Lives Matter movement that started last year continue in South Hadley each Saturday morning from 10:00 to 10:30am. Despite the colder weather, people have have still gathered every week in 2021. Participants line
the
sidewalks 6-7 feet apart for social distancing, from the Center Church (across from the Town Common) south down Route 116. Please
bring your own sign and wear a face covering. All are
welcome. For pictures, visit the church's Facebook page.
Following
its years-long tradition of vigils for social justice, Center Church
has sponsored the weekly events for racial justice for many months,
attracting loyal participants from South Hadley, Amherst,
Hadley, Ludlow, Chicopee, Hatfield, Holyoke, and other surrounding
towns.
A community has formed and a number of ideas for the
future have been suggested, including continuing the vigils on a
bi-weekly or monthly basis,
gathering together on Zoom, and offering short programs on YouTube. But
the most important suggestion has been to keep in touch, share ideas and
resources, and inspire each other. If
the vigils have been important to you, please sign up to be on the
email list to share suggestions and resources, and get updates. Racial
injustice will not stop because of the cold weather and efforts in
support of racial justice also continue. To connect with vigil organizers to share ideas and thoughts or join the mailing list, email: <southhadleyvigil@gmail.com>.
